Start with your use case
The single most important question is not which brand or which processor — it is what you will actually do with the laptop. A student carrying it to lectures needs under 1.5 kg and 10+ hours of battery. A 3D artist needs a dedicated GPU and a colour-accurate display. A competitive gamer needs a high-refresh panel and a powerful cooling system. Write down your top three daily tasks before you look at a single spec sheet. This simple exercise eliminates 80% of the market and saves you from overspending on features you will never use.
The processor question: Intel, AMD, or Apple Silicon
In 2024, all three are excellent but they shine in different ways. Apple M3 chips dominate in efficiency — a MacBook Air delivers desktop-class performance in a fanless 1.24 kg chassis with 18 hours of battery. AMD Ryzen 8000 series offers the best price-to-performance on Windows, especially the 7800X3D for gaming. The display: your most important interface
You stare at the display for hours every day, so do not skimp. For productivity, look for at least 300 nits brightness and 100% sRGB coverage. For creative work, 100% DCI-P3 and factory calibration matter — look for Calman Verified or X-Rite calibrated panels. For gaming, refresh rate is king: 144Hz is the baseline, 240Hz is ideal for competitive titles. OLED panels offer infinite contrast and perfect blacks but consume more battery. Ports and connectivity
