How active noise cancellation works
ANC uses microphones to capture ambient noise, then generates an inverted sound wave that cancels it out through destructive interference. Modern ANC uses multiple microphones (the Sony WH-1000XM5 has 8) and dedicated processors that analyze noise in real-time. Feedforward ANC uses external mics; feedback ANC uses internal mics near your ear; hybrid ANC uses both for superior performance across frequencies.
What ANC can and cannot do
ANC excels at low-frequency, continuous noise — aeroplane engines, train rumbles, AC hums, and traffic. It struggles with sudden, high-frequency sounds — shouting, a babys cry, or a door slamming. No ANC will make a crying baby inaudible. For those scenarios, earplugs plus ANC, or in-ear monitors with silicone tips, work better.
Key specs to look for
Battery life: look for 25+ hours with ANC on. Codec support: LDAC (Android Hi-Res), aptX Adaptive (low latency), AAC (iOS). Multipoint Bluetooth lets you connect to two devices simultaneously. Comfort matters as much as specs — always try before you buy if possible. A 250g headphone that clamps too hard becomes painful after an hour.
